Heartwood is a jet black, sometimes with grey or dark brown streaks. It is an extremely hard, dense and heavy wood with an extremely fine texture so much so that it takes on a very smooth finish when polished. Although Indian Ebony, aka Ceylon Ebony, was the original ebony of commerce, it’s seldom available today. This wood is popular because of its durability and is decay resistant. Expect availability to be very scarce. Very limited quantities are ever available for guitar sets. Its modern uses have been restricted to small items such as musical instruments, black piano, viola, violin, mandolin, guitar, cello fingerboards, tailpieces, pegs, chin rests etc.
